10 Rumors That Fueled the Tension in Khagrachhari

On the night of September 23, a teenage girl from the hill region of Khagrachhari was allegedly raped. Following the allegation, on September 24, one of the accused, Shayan Shil, was arrested. However, organized attempts have been made to spread rumors aimed at inciting conflict between the Bengali and Pahari communities. As of the publication of this report, media outlets have confirmed the deaths of three individuals. BanglaFact has since identified several rumors circulating around this incident.


In most of the cases, unrelated videos and photos, either originating from other countries or depicting different incidents within Bangladesh, were falsely claimed to be from Khagrachhari. BanglaFact has found that many of these rumors were spread by pages and accounts linked to Awami League-affiliated groups whose activities had previously been banned.

Rumor 1: Gunfire at night

A video purportedly showing nighttime gunfire went viral on Facebook, with claims that it was from Khagrachhari. In reality, the video originated from Indonesia, where it was recorded during anti-government protests over rising commodity prices in late August of this year. Fact-check link


Rumor 2: Fire at Model Mosque

A video circulated on Facebook claiming that Pahari people had set fire to the Khagrachhari Model Mosque. However, the video was actually from Dinajpur in August this year, when a resort named Jibon Mahal was set ablaze during a protest under the banner of Touhidi Janata. Fact-check link


Rumor 3: Attack on BGB members

A photograph circulated online claiming that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were attacked in Khagrachhari. The photo, however, was actually from September 24, 2023, and depicted an incident in Panchhari, Khagrachhari, where locals attacked BGB personnel and freed two detainees who were being held with confiscated money. A video claimed that hill people were assaulting an army soldier. Fact-checking revealed that it was from July 22, during a clash between students and the army in front of the Secretariat in Dhaka. Link


Rumor 10: Army burning down houses of hill people

A video circulating online claims that the army was burning houses belonging to hill people. However, verification shows the footage is not from here; it originates from Myanmar and has been available in media reports since November 13, 2016.
